Flying Thunder

Updated: Jun 28

You can't just stop at a gas station for directions. Two weeks on the road or in the sky. Flying from California to Washington, DC for Memorial Day, This doc followed a group of people who flew and maintained Vietnam era helicopters. Helicopters like the Bell UH-1 Iroquois or the "Huey" as the troops named it. Pictured above is a Bell Kiowa. I could kick myself for neglecting to take a photo of the iconic Hueys. That's how it goes. A cameraman rarely gets the time or opportunity to make good still imgaes.

At each stop along the way Vietnam veterans accompanied by friends and family would come out to see the old helicopters and talk to the pilots. The sound of a Huey is very distinctive and many of the veterans were moved to tears.

Even highways have a beauty to them from the air.

This gear looked a lot better on the actual pilots.
