Old Photos, Glue, Watercolor Paper

Tanner Wolfe

Many years ago I began using old photos to create something new on my journals.
Many years ago I began using old photos to create something new on my journals.

I've made thousands of images over the years. Each image held an ineffable spark, but I discarded so many images because they didn't stand up to my very high standards. Standards set by the giants of photography such as, Henri Cartier-Bresson, August Sander, Robert Frank, Edward Weston, Diane Arbus, Paul Strand, Irving Penn and Sebastiao Salgado. These people could tell a complete story with one image. However my old photos embody something that becomes powerful when assembled with other photographs. So I'll embrace these fragments and make something new.

Recently I received encouragement from an old friend to take this from a form of decoration to making a stand alone art piece. The image above is my first foray into a new kind of photography. Making this new/old image reminded me of the first time I edited my cinematography reel. I lost myself in making that reel. It was play. Wonderful. The same with the collaged image above--I don't know how long I spent on it, but every moment was enjoyable.
