Hello My Name Is Frank was shot in eastern Washington. During the summer. In the desert. It was a hot, challenging shoot, but we made a nice little film.
This is a road trip movie, so we shot so MUCH process trailer.
Me, the director, AD and scripty behind me. I could write a long treatise on the importance of a good, wide-brimmed hat while shooting day exterior. The hat I'm wearing here was barely adequate.
The desert. Nice inside the car; different story where we're standing.
In the course of the film, the main character Frank played by Garrett M Brown, steals this vintage John Deere. We attached a camera to the top of the tractor which enabled us to shoot the driver and his POV. I dearly wish I had a picture of the rig that my Key Grip Cory Reed built onto this thing. It was a thing of beauty.
2nd Assistan Director, Seth Farley volunteered to show us how the paramedics would load the actor into the ambulance. He's smiling, so he's definitely having fun.
Day exterior: chasing the sun. My grip team were a bunch of hardworking guys.
Practical locations are always a challenge. Shooting in the studio, you can have a wall removed if you need to back up further, etc. We shot several scenes in this living room and it never got any bigger. I'd have benefited from a zoom lens on this shoot or always with practical locations.
