In The Beginning

Updated: Jul 2

Mosque, Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq. The very first people to hire me were a group out of Albuquerque, NM. Together we shot documentaries in California, Washington, DC, India, Israel, Iraq and Morocco over a span of several years. Above is a still from a time-lapse we did. The cops (carrying AK-47s) interrupted our first time-lapse at another location. My interpreter didn't know what a time-lapse video was, so he couldn't explain it. Therefore, we were cordially invited to leave.

Washington, DC. I particularly like this image because it reminds me of the shoot we did at the Hay-Adams Hotel. The idea was to do a talking head interview with the White House in the background. We spent hours setting up and shooting. Just as we wrapped, we received a call from the front desk. They had received a call from the Secret Service. The Secret Service said, "you're done." So we were done.

Washington, DC. This is kind of what the frame for the film looked like. Hopefully better lighting.

Washington, DC. Former Director of the CIA, Porter Goss. I look at this lighting set-up and I hope I wasn't done. Unless I was trying to make him look like the prince of darkness.

Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq

Hotel room, Amman, Jordan. This is called a Qibla pointer. That way lies Mecca. For Muslims this a helpful tool incorporated into many hotels in the Middle East and beyond.

Location unknown. Ladies at the market.

The Holy Sepulchre, Old City, Jerusalem

Tomb of Zechariah. Looking towards the Mount of Olives. Old City Jerusalem

Kibbutz Ginosar, Israel. We shot from helicopters many times along the way. Here we took off from a kibuttz near the Sea of Galilee. The camera attached to a Tyler Mount made this a much smoother operation than shooting hand-held.

Credits (L to R) Panasonic HVX200, The director Daniel Lusko, Assistant Cameraman whose name I can't remember to save my life. The HVX200 was an amazing little camera. I shot hours of footage with that camera. Modern cameras have eclipsed the HVX, but for a few years it was a great choice for a bare bones, run and gun type of production.

Sea of Galilee Boat. Discovered in the mud of the Sea of Galilee in 1986, it dates to the 1st century AD.

Old City, Rabat, Morocco

Old City, Rabat, Morocco. I love taking pictures of kids. Even though they're barely in the frame, I really enjoy this picture. The little one gamely hanging onto the back of her sister to the girl on the left carrying a bundle of something, it's all interesting. Polite, but business-like expressions on their faces reveals a purpose or errand of some kind. These ladies are going somewhere.
