Big Boy is a film about hearing impairment, the Cochlear Implant, boyhood and coming of age.
For this film I followed Christopher (above right) a 16 year old who is profoundly hearing impaired. When he was 3 years old he received the Cochlear Implant which allowed him to hear and to learn to speak. This film chronicles Christopher’s trials and triumphs as he makes his way through life. The trailer can be seen here.
Interview with his father, Paul.
This is Christopher at Lake Michigan with his sister.
For this film I chose the Canon 5D Mark II. Here I’m shooting with a Canon 50mm 1.2L and no monitor. This is very tricky as it is challenging and nearly impossible to gauge focus with the tiny monitor on the back of the camera. On this day it was my only choice and the footage looks really great.
Christopher’s niece and sister. Separately they were cooperative interviewees, together they were a force to reckon with.
